Early Figurative/Narrative Work
I am largely self-taught, as were some of my greatest influences, including Van Gogh and Rousseau. Exposure in the 1970s to Chicago's Imagist/Hairy Who movement and studies in journalism and psychology at Northwestern University inspired the irreverent and humorous world view of my early figurative-narrative work in acrylics.

In the 1980s, the influence of Northern California's Funk movement, as well as painting/drawing studies with Oliver Jackson, Maria Winkler, Dan Connally and Anne Gregory, deepened my interest in using color to create an emotional impact and tell a story. The ever-larger canvases of my one-woman shows at galleries and restaurants in Sacramento and Los Angeles during the 1990s expressed my deepening love for life.

That love faced its greatest challenges in spring of 1998 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer and in 2000-2005 as the cancer recurred each year. Faced with the harsh reality that my future was far from guaranteed, I came to appreciate the value of stopping to smell - and paint - the flowers.

Power Flowers
Changing my focus from fauna to flora began as a way to immortalize the feelings contained in each of the well-wishing blooms sent by friends and family during my illness. Rather than lamenting the transitory nature of life, my still-life "Power Flowers" series of paintings came to celebrate the immortal nature of love. These vibrant flowers are designed to last; captured in oil, painting's longest-enduring medium, they express the indomitability of beauty.

New LandEscapes and Figurative/Narrative Work
As I'm feeling better, my work is reflecting the joy I'm feeling and the fun situations I'm imagining and remembering. Look for my new LandEscape paintings which show how memories "color" our impressions of past places, and for more humorous figurative/narrative work, particularly porcelain sculptures prompted by studies with Miriam Davis (for images, see Scultpure page). Also, I've started some large, new abstract paintings called "Interior Motives" that will first be seen at the Case Bella show opening Apri 8. Those images will be up on this web site soon.
